    Israel orders more eastern Rafah neighbourhoods to evacuate

    The Israeli military has expanded its evacuation order for Rafah, telling residents of designated blocks of the al-Jnaina, Khirbet al-Adas, and al-Adari neighbourhoods, and Shaboura camp to urgently leave.

    In a post on X, the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee told residents to “immediately head to the expanded humanitarian area in al-Mawasi”.

    Madrid, Spain – Huge Palestinian flags are hanging on campuses across Spain as thousands of students protest against Israel’s war in Gaza.

    Some classes have stopped this week as students demonstrate in Barcelona, Valencia, the Basque Country and Madrid.

    Across Europe, similar sit-ins have taken place at universities in the Netherlands, France, the United Kingdom, Finland, Denmark and Germany, as young people join their United States peers who are facing a violent police response.

    In Amsterdam, police arrested about 125 activists as they broke up a pro-Palestinian camp at the University of Amsterdam on Tuesday. Dutch police said their action was necessary to “restore order” after protests turned violent. There were no reports of injuries. Footage aired by national broadcaster NOS showed a mechanical digger smashing down barricades and tents.

    But in Spain, a country that historically supports the Palestinian cause, police have so far not been involved in trying to break up the protests.

    “We have to show we care. We have to take a stand against what is happening in Gaza and the way Israel is acting,” Maria Angeles Lopez, 21, a psychology student, told Al Jazeera outside the University of Barcelona.

    “If students here and elsewhere show we don’t agree with what is happening, then perhaps it will make people in power think again.”

    In many Spanish universities that have witnessed protests, more than 2,000 lecturers have come out in support of the rallies.

    Scholars at the University of Malaga are also expected to start demonstrating on Wednesday. (...)

      Il est tout à fait compréhensible de voir l’enthousiasme, l’excitation et le soulagement à Gaza après que le Hamas a accepté les termes d’une proposition de cessez-le-feu.

      Cependant, du côté israélien, il n’y a absolument aucune confirmation.

      En fait, les médias israéliens laissent entendre qu’Israël n’acceptera pas cette proposition. La chaîne 13 en Israël, qui est généralement assez fiable, affirme que le Hamas a accepté une proposition égyptienne édulcorée, ce qui n’est pas acceptable pour les Israéliens.

      Il y a quelques heures à peine, Yoav Gallant, le ministre israélien de la défense, a déclaré aux familles des captifs que le Hamas avait rejeté toutes les propositions qui nous permettraient de récupérer les prisonniers, et qu’il nous obligeait donc à lancer une opération à Rafah.

      Des sources ont indiqué à Al Jazeera que la proposition égypto-qatarie acceptée par le Hamas comprendrait trois phases, chacune d’une durée de 42 jours.

      La première phase verrait l’instauration d’une trêve et le retrait israélien du corridor de Netzarim, qu’Israël utilise pour diviser le nord et le sud de la bande de Gaza.

      La deuxième phase comprendrait l’approbation d’une cessation permanente des opérations militaires et hostiles et le retrait complet des forces israéliennes de Gaza.

      La proposition comprend également une disposition approuvant la fin du blocus de Gaza au cours de la troisième phase.

      Gideon Levy, éditorialiste du journal israélien Haaretz, estime que le Hamas a « pris une mesure brillante » qui a mis Israël dans l’embarras.

      Le Hamas a dit très clairement : « Nous acceptons un accord », dont personne ne connaît exactement les détails, et maintenant la balle est dans les mains d’Israël, qui doit décider", a-t-il déclaré à Al Jazeera.

      « Pour M. Netanyahou, il s’agit d’une décision très, très difficile à prendre, car il pourrait perdre son gouvernement. D’un autre côté, s’il dit non, il est très clair qu’Israël veut la guerre et non les otages », a déclaré M. Levy.

      L’analyste a fait remarquer que la situation avait atteint un stade « très critique » et qu’il n’y avait plus de temps pour un quelconque report.

      « M. Netanyahou doit décider ce qu’il préfère : un gouvernement qui continue à rester au pouvoir, Dieu sait pourquoi, ... ou prendre une décision courageuse, dire oui à l’accord, libérer les otages, mettre fin à cette guerre - qui n’a rien fait de bon en Israël et certainement pas pour les Palestiniens - et essayer de créer une nouvelle réalité à Gaza », a déclaré M. Levy.

      « C’est son choix. Le connaissant, il ne choisira pas le meilleur ».

    Adnan al-Bursh, a Palestinian surgeon and professor of orthopaedic medicine, was killed by torture while in Israeli detention, according to a statement from the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society.

    In what has been termed a “deliberate assassination”, Bursh, 50, died in the Israel-controlled Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank on 19 April, according to the Palestinian Civil Affairs Committee, and his body remains withheld.

    Another detainee, Ismail Abdul Bari Khader, 33, also died in custody, according to the joint statement, and his body was handed over on 2 May along with 64 other prisoners.

    “The two victims died of torture and crimes committed against Gazan detainees,” the statement said.

    Bursh was the head of orthopaedic medicine at al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City and had been arrested in December, around the same time that he had reportedly been wounded by Israeli bombardment at the Indonesian hospital in northern Gaza.

While I acquire more information, I URGE the diplomatic community to intervene with CONCRETE MEASURES to protect Palestinians.

      No Palestinian is safe under Israel’s occupation today.

      De nouvelles accusations de tortures dans une prison israélienne. Deux prisonniers gazaouis, dont un médecin de l’hôpital al-Shifa de Gaza, sont morts derrière les barreaux israéliens, ont affirmé jeudi deux associations palestiniennes de défense des droits des détenus, affirmant qu’ils ont succombé à « des tortures » et à l’absence de soins.

      Dans un communiqué commun, le Club des prisonniers et le Comité des affaires des prisonniers palestiniens, ont annoncé la mort « de deux détenus de Gaza », dont « le Dr Adnane Ahmed Atiya al-Bourch, 50 ans (…) chef du département d’Orthopédie de l’hôpital al-Shifa ». L’autre détenu décédé serait Abdel Bari Rajab Khadir, 33 ans.

      Tous deux seraient morts « des suites de tortures et de crimes médicaux dont sont victimes les détenus de Gaza », affirment les associations, en référence au manque de soins régulièrement dénoncé par les défenseurs des droits humains israéliens et palestiniens.
      Le Dr Bourch, une figure des hôpitaux gazaouis

      Le ministère de la Santé du Hamas dans la bande de Gaza a condamné « le meurtre (…) sous la torture » du Dr Bourch, affirmant que son décès portait à 492 le nombre de membres du personnel médical tués depuis le début de la guerre entre Israël et le Hamas, déclenchée le 7 octobre par une attaque sans précédent du mouvement islamiste palestinien. L’armée israélienne a indiqué à l’AFP « n’être pas informée » de tels faits.

      Le Dr Bourch était connu des Palestiniens pour ses interviews aux médias, où il décrivait la situation des hôpitaux de la bande de Gaza, ciblés par l’armée israélienne qui accuse le Hamas de s’en servir comme bases opérationnelles. Arrêté « par l’armée d’occupation en décembre 2023 dans un hôpital » du nord du territoire palestinien, il est mort dans la prison d’Ofer, en Cisjordanie occupée, le 19 avril, selon les deux associations qui précisent que sa dépouille y est « toujours retenue ». Le Dr Bourch avait été blessé « il y a cinq mois », ont-elles indiqué, sans préciser son état de santé lors de son arrestation.

      Doctor killing takes medical sector death toll to 496

      The killing of Dr Adnan al-Barash in an Israeli prison that we reported on earlier has taken the total death toll of medical personnel since the start of the war on Gaza to 496.

      Gaza’s health ministry said in a statement that about 1,500 medical workers have also been wounded, and 309 remain imprisoned in Israeli jails.

      “The killing of Dr al-Barash would not be the last crime in light of the complete secrecy of the condition of prisoners in prisons, especially those arrested from the Gaza Strip,” said the ministry.

      It also called on the international community and health and human rights organisations to intervene and protect prisoners held by Israel.

      Al-Bursh, 50, was the head of the orthopedic department at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. He was arrested by the Israeli army last December as he treated patients at al-Adwa Hospital in northern Gaza.

    Dans une interview accordée au Time, l’ancien président américain Donald Trump n’a pas exclu un retrait de l’aide militaire à Israël en raison de la guerre qu’il mène actuellement contre Gaza.

    Le ministre français des affaires étrangères a déclaré à M. Netanyahou que le lancement d’une offensive à Rafah était une « mauvaise idée » et ne mènerait à aucune résolution de la guerre à Gaza.

      Les attaques aériennes et d’artillerie israéliennes se sont intensifiées dans la partie orientale du district de Rafah, où une incursion terrestre est attendue, rapporte Tareq Abu Azzoum d’Al Jazeera depuis l’enclave.

    Journalism professors call on New York Times to review October 7 report

    Fifty-nine journalism professors from top US universities have called on the New York Times to address questions about a report that described a “pattern of gender-based violence” in the October 7 attacks on Israel.

    The professors said they felt the need to issue a letter to the newspaper after coming across “compelling reports” challenging the integrity of the story.

    “The Times’ editorial leadership appears to have largely dismissed these reports and remains silent on important and troubling questions raised about its reporting and editorial processes,” they wrote in the letter, a copy of which was obtained and posted online by the Washington Post.

    “We believe this inaction is not only harming The Times itself, it also actively endangers journalists, including American reporters working in conflict zones as well as Palestinian journalists (of which, the Committee to Protect Journalists estimates, around 100 have been killed in this conflict so far),” the professors said.

    A spokeswoman for the Times said that the paper has “reviewed the work that was done on this piece of journalism and [we] are satisfied that it met our editorial standards”, the Post reported.

    Huit personnes, dont des enfants et des femmes, ont été tuées dans des bombardements israéliens tôt ce matin dans le camp de réfugiés de Nuseirat, dans le centre de la bande de Gaza, rapporte Wafa. L’agence de presse a également fait état de deux personnes tuées plus tôt dans la région de Nuseirat.
    Cinq personnes, dont deux enfants, ont été tuées dans un bombardement israélien à Rafah, rapportent nos collègues d’Al Jazeera Arabic.

    Deux jeunes Palestiniens ont été tués après que les forces israéliennes ont ouvert le feu près du poste de contrôle militaire de Salem, à l’ouest de Jénine, en Cisjordanie occupée, selon l’article de Wafa.

    The bill would allocate $26.38bn to “support Israel in its effort to defend itself against Iran and its proxies”, as well as reimbursing US military operations in response to recent attacks.

    It stipulates that funding for the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA is prohibited. Last month, Congress approved a funding bill banning assistance for the United Nations agency until 2025, following Israeli allegations – reportedly obtained under torture – that employees participated in the October 7 Hamas attack.

    Funding includes:

    $5.2bn to replenish and expand Israel’s missile and rocket defence system
    $3.5bn for purchasing advanced weapons systems
    $1bn to enhance weapons production
    $4.4bn for other supplies and services to Israel
    $9.2bn in humanitarian aid

    A la Biennale de Venise, le pavillon israélien n’ouvrira pas ses portes cette année. En tout cas pas tant qu’un cessez-le-feu et qu’un accord pour libérer les otages ne seront pas actés. En raison de la guerre opposant le Hamas à Israël, une campagne médiatique pro-palestinienne avait tenté, en vain, de faire annuler l’ouverture du pavillon qui accueille l’exposition de Ruth Patir. C’est finalement l’artiste israélienne elle-même, soutenue par les deux curatrices du pavillon, qui a décidé ce geste fort de protestation mardi 16 avril.

    Toutes les trois, « nous sommes devenues l’actualité et non plus l’art, déplore Ruth Patir sur son compte Instagram. Je m’oppose fermement au boycott culturel, mais comme je pense qu’il n’y a pas de bonne réponse et que je ne peux faire que ce que je peux avec l’espace dont je dispose, je préfère joindre ma voix à ceux qui lancent ce cri : Cessez-le-feu immédiat, ramenez les otages, nous n’en pouvons plus ».

    A l’heure où les journalistes vont commencer à affluer au Giardini (la Biennale n’ouvrira au grand public que samedi), les portes du grand pavillon blanc resteront donc closes, comme l’a annoncé le New York Times.     A Palestinian mother has bid farewell to her young daughter after a bullet shot by Israeli forces hit her face, according to footage posted on social media by Palestinian photographer Atia Darwish.

    The girl’s mother can be seen crying and hugging her dead child.

    The killing of the girl occurred as the family was among hundreds of displaced Palestinians attempting to return to northern Gaza. Israeli forces opened fire on those seeking to make the journey home.

    Les forces israéliennes ont mené des raids nocturnes en Cisjordanie, arrêtant cinq personnes à Tulkarem.

    Jeudi, l’armée de l’air israélienne a mené des exercices conjoints avec l’armée de l’air chypriote, selon un rapport de la station de radio de l’armée israélienne GLZ. GLZ a indiqué qu’il s’agissait d’exercices à longue portée et d’une attaque sur une cible éloignée.

    Un Libanais, Mohammad Srour, sanctionné par les États-Unis pour ses liens présumés avec le groupe palestinien Hamas, a été retrouvé mort mercredi après avoir disparu pendant une semaine. Il avait été sanctionné en 2019 pour avoir apporté "un soutien financier, matériel, technologique, des services financiers ou autres" au Hamas et pour son affiliation au Hezbollah.

    Aux États-Unis, le président Joe Biden a promis mercredi un soutien "à toute épreuve" à Israël, alors que l’Iran menace de représailles après une frappe qui a rasé un bâtiment du consulat iranien à Damas et tué deux généraux.

    Dans un message posté sur X, le ministre des affaires étrangères Israël Katz a menacé que les forces israéliennes frapperaient directement l’Iran si celui-ci lançait une attaque contre Israël à partir de son territoire.

    L’agence de presse Reuters a rapporté jeudi que l’envoyé américain au Moyen-Orient, Brett McGurk, avait appelé les ministres des affaires étrangères de l’Arabie saoudite, des Émirats arabes unis, du Qatar et de l’Irak, leur demandant de transmettre un message à l’Iran pour qu’il évite d’aggraver les tensions avec Israël. L’Iran accuse Israël d’être à l’origine de la montée des tensions.

    La compagnie aérienne allemande Lufthansa a déclaré mercredi qu’elle avait suspendu ses vols vers Téhéran en raison des craintes accrues d’une éventuelle conflagration entre l’Iran et Israël.

    Violence en Cisjordanie occupée

    Jeudi, les troupes israéliennes auraient mené des raids dans deux villes de Cisjordanie occupée.

    Un correspondant d’Al Jazeera a déclaré que les forces israéliennes étaient entrées dans la ville de Beit Ummar, au nord d’Hébron, aux premières heures de la matinée de jeudi. Elles sont également entrées dans la ville d’Idhna, située à l’ouest d’Hébron.

    Here’s how things stand on Friday, April 5, 2024:
    Fighting and humanitarian crisis

    Eight out of every 10 schools in Gaza are damaged or destroyed, UNICEF said, news agency AFP reported on Thursday. As many as 625,000 students have no access to education.

    About 1,000 children in Gaza have lost one or both of their legs, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said on Thursday. More than 50,000 children are estimated to be acutely malnourished in Gaza, the United Nations added.

    The PRCS also said the number of children who have died from starvation and dehydration in Gaza has now risen to 31.

    Separately, the Gaza municipality warned on Thursday that diseases are spreading in the enclave due to an accumulation of waste. The municipality called on local and international institutions to help improve the health and environmental conditions “and enable the municipality to provide services that the aggression has caused near complete paralysis in.”

    Diplomacy and regional tensions

    On Thursday, US President Joe Biden pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to implement “specific, concrete and measurable” steps to protect civilians and aid workers in Gaza. He said the killing of aid workers and the humanitarian situation were “unacceptable”.

    Biden also “made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action” to address the harm and suffering.

    Hours after the call, Israel said it approved the reopening of the Beit Hanoon (Erez) crossing into northern Gaza and the temporary use of Ashdod port in southern Israel to supply aid to Gaza.

    But Republicans in the US hit back at Biden. “The president’s ultimatums should be going to Hamas, not Israel,” US House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a post on X on Thursday night, following Biden’s warning to Israel.

    CIA Director Bill Burns is expected to travel to Cairo this weekend to meet with Egyptian and Israeli counterparts and the Qatari prime minister, in the latest bid to try and stitch together a deal for a truce or a ceasefire.

    Separately, on Thursday, McDonald’s announced that it will buy all of its franchise restaurants in Israel amid the fallout of the war in Gaza. The US fast-food chain has been subject to boycotts since the franchise Alonyal announced shortly after the October 7 attack by Palestinian group Hamas that it would be donating free meals to the Israeli military.

    Former US President Donald Trump also warned that Israel is “losing the PR war” in Gaza on Thursday because of the flood of distressing images coming out of the enclave.

    Separately, Australian Senator Lidia Thorpe has questioned an Australian government contract with Elbit Systems amid media reports that the Israeli arms company manufactured the drone that killed an Australian and six other aid workers in Gaza.

    Violence in the occupied West Bank

    Ambulances were temporarily blocked from reaching two Palestinians injured by live ammunition as Israeli forces raided Kafr Ra’i, southwest of Jenin, in the occupied West Bank on Thursday night, according to local news reports.
    The raid is one of several Israeli raids on towns and villages south of Jenin, the Wafa news agency reported on Thursday.
    Wafa also reported on Thursday that Israeli forces fired bullets, stun grenades and tear gas in a raid on the village of Husan, west of Bethlehem, with no injuries reported.

    Israel behaves in the same way whenever its soldiers assault, abuse, or kill Palestinians.

    In 2016, an Israeli military medic killed a disarmed and injured Palestinian by shooting him in the head.

    At first, the military decided not to press charges against the soldier.

    Then, Israeli NGO @btselem published a video of the killing, which led to condemnations around the world.

    Only at that point was the soldier taken to court. He was convicted and, after 9 months, was released from prison.

    Again and again, the Israeli military denies allegations, and is forced to confess only when left with no other choice.

    And even when the Israeli military admits to accusations, it makes up excuses: “we acted lawfully,” "these are just a few rotten apples"…

    So, the military tries to deny the facts. When this doesn’t work, it denies the meaning of these facts.

    Following sociologist Stanley Cohen, the former denial tactic of the Israeli military can be called “factual” (or “literal”) denial.
