231 Palestinians killed in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem: UN

The death toll between October 7 and November 27 includes 59 children, says the UN agency OCHA.

It added that 222 of the people killed were shot by Israeli forces, eight by Israeli settlers and one either by forces or settlers.

The seven-week toll represents more than half of all Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank this year.

So far, 2023 has been the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank since OCHA began recording casualties in 2005.

‘Utterly nonsensical to think killing of children will create peace’

UNICEF spokesperson James Elder has spoken to Al Jazeera after a visit to Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

He described what he saw as “devastating”, calling the hospital both an “emergency ward” and a “warzone”.

“Everywhere you turn is a child in incredibly need,” Elder said from outside the hospital. “Multiple children with amputations, little boys and little girls who six, seven weeks ago were playing football with their friends.”

Elder praised the “incredible, brave, tireless health workers who are working around the clock” to tend “to every child they can”. However, he said, “doctors are having to make decisions they shouldn’t have to make.”

He also said that the aid that entered Gaza in recent days was “great” but “not enough”.

“It will only be enough if these nail-biting pauses are extended into a ceasefire, into a lasting peace. We cannot possibly think that the destruction of Gaza and the killing of children is going to create peace in the region. That’s utterly nonsensical,” Elder continued, calling for more aid to be delivered in peaceful conditions.

More Palestinians detained than released during truce

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society says Israeli forces have detained 168 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since the start of the truce on Friday.

During the same period, 150 Palestinians have been released by Israel since Friday as part of the agreement.
