    ‘Israelis feel humiliated’: Haaretz journalsit

Gideon Levy, a journalist at the Israeli daily Haaretz, has told Al Jazeera that Israelis feel humiliated by the Hamas attack and haven’t yet digested what happened or how their military was unprepared.

“Firstly, there is this traditional Israeli ignorance that we have the strongest army and the strongest military technology. Secondly, the government expanded troops in the West Bank and left the Southern front abandoned. So a combination of arrogance and change of priorities brought us to this unprecedented situation,” he said.

“It will take years for Israelis to digest this shock and trauma. But it must lead to change, where Israelis realise how they have been perceiving Palestinians in the occupied territories and Gaza so far. We have to realise that they [Palestinians] are also human beings and that they can also show military capabilities,” Levy added.

      Nowhere to go

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned residents in Gaza to “leave now” before Israeli forces would turn the enclave into a “deserted island”.

      But where can they go?

Hamas fighters rearmed in southern Israel: AJ correspondent

Reporting from southern Israel, about 10km (6.2 miles) from the Israel-Gaza fence, Al Jazeera’s Rob Reynolds has said that the Israeli military has not managed to dislodge Hamas fighters from some of the towns and villages in Southern Israel.

“We’ve also heard that Hamas fighters have been resupplied and rearmed and taken a new place – Kibutz Magen – in southern Israel, which was previously untouched,” Reynolds said.

“As fighting rages, we are going to hear about a rising death toll from Israel. Currently, ‘600 civilian deaths’ is a number that is going to absolutely horrify Israeli civilians… That is also going to be a cause for vengeance against Gaza,” he added.

      Here’s the latest from Gaza

Our correspondent Tarek Abu Azzoum has the latest from Gaza:

People in Gaza are facing “severe drastic conditions” as Israeli air strikes continue.
Israeli jets destroyed the building housing the Palestinian Islamic National Bank, a short distance from where Al Jazeera was reporting live from.
Other civilian infrastructures on the street were also levelled to the ground.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the death toll now stands at more than 380 Palestinians killed and over 2,200 injured.
Some 80 percent of households are without electricity.
Palestinians in Gaza have received messages on their phones from Israeli authorities, especially those living near the eastern part of Gaza, to evacuate immediately and move to more central areas.

People in Gaza ‘have nowhere to go’

Palestinians living along the fence border with Israel have received messages on their phones from the Israeli military, ordering them to evacuate their homes.

“We have nowhere to go,” Ahmed Abu Amra, a Palestinian father-of-three who lives near the border, told Al Jazeera.

“Our home is under threat of bombardment, as is the entire border area. The worst part is that I found myself in the street with my kids and other neighbours, not knowing where to go. The area close to the border is like a war zone. There’s no transportation to take us anywhere.”

Those forced to leave their homes are taking shelter in schools, hoping Israel will not bomb those buildings, says Khaled, Ahmed’s brother.

UN food agency calls for humanitarian corridors in Gaza

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has called for the creation of humanitarian corridors to bring food into Gaza as Israeli air strikes pounded the Palestinian enclave.

“As the conflict intensifies, civilians, including vulnerable children and families, face mounting challenges in accessing essential food supplies,” the Rome-based WFP said.

“WFP urges safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to affected areas, calling on all parties to uphold the principles of humanitarian law … including ensuring access to food.”

The UN agency provides direct food assistance to some 350,000 Palestinians monthly, while also offering aid to nearly one million Palestinians in cooperation with other humanitarian partners via cash transfers.

WFP said it was ready to set up pre-positioned food stocks for people who had been displaced or were in shelters.

“While most shops in the affected areas in Palestine currently maintain one month of food stocks, these risk being depleted swiftly as people buy up food in fear of a prolonged conflict,” it said.
