A Brief Exploration of #reality

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.”― Albert EinsteinEverybody is talking about reality, and yet nobody fully understands what reality really means.Reality describes a state which a human being is not able to experience, since, according to Wikipedia, “reality is the sum or aggregate of all that is real or existent, as opposed to that which is merely imaginary.” We cannot observe reality since “in living beings, observation employs the senses.”As a matter of fact, our senses can’t receive all that is real or existent. The mantis shrimp, for example, is able to process stimulation by light with 12 different color receptors, unlike the human or other animals which have a low amount of different color receptors. Thus, a mantis shrimp sees colors our senses can’t perceive. (...)

100 Questions About the Past, Present & Future of HumanityCapitalism, happiness, AI, Kylie Jenner and the human condition: welcome to a radical, unrefined stream of consciousness. For a design-thinking assignment, I was required to come up with a 100 questions about the world. The following statements are questions or insights — some trivial, some absurd, some profound. Some have objective answers, while others are simply cognitive stimulants. They are not grouped thematically, but simply presented in the order in which they were conceived. At times, there is no discernible train of thought, but some questions have thematic continuity.Caffeine is advised. Onward.Brown paper packages tied up with strings. Trust, Time, and Coordinating Our Shared FutureThis is the fifth installment of a long form essay — or short book — outlining my macro perspective on how the emerging crypto ecosystem fits within the greater context of biological, cultural, and economic evolution. I intend to initially publish each installment separately. Afterward, I’ll release the content in its entirety, with additional notes and research materials, in e-book form.If you haven’t already read the first four installments of this series, you should probably read them before continuing with this article, as each installment builds upon earlier concepts.Crypto Beyond Capitalism Essays - Hacker NoonOtherwise, strap in, because this installment is quite the long and winding ride.Down the long lane of the history yet to be written, (...)

The threat of hylomorphic #design thinking

Innovators must learn to anticipate how their materials and creations design us.Note: This is the first of a series of posts inspired by Levi Bryant‘s book, Onto-Cartography: An Ontology of Machines and Media. For a few years now, I’ve been obsessed with critiquing the notion that the great creators bend reality to their will. Some think that Steve Jobs, ignoring naysayers and customer feedback, changed the world to fit his vision. But in actuality, no leader is powerful enough to manipulate materials and people as they want. It’s always a negotiation. And to take things a step further, our creations design us as we design them. The idea that designers can frictionlessly bend materials to their whims connects with the ancient philosophical tradition of hylomorphism. Rooted in the thinking of (...)

Photo from UnsplashThe ideas of existentialist philosophers all have something to teach us about how to think about, and deal with, anxiety. The philosophers I will cover in this essay are Emil Cioran and Søren Kierkegaard, who provide incredibly unique and acute insight into the topic of anxiety.Have you ever felt anxious, that feeling of a knot in your stomach, palms sweaty, and thought to yourself, “there’s absolutely no reason for me to be anxious right now”? Or perhaps you’ve felt anxious, but recognized that logically having anxiety at the moment does not make sense. Or perhaps — as other people do with anxiety — they feel anxiety and think to themselves “I am anxious because of X”, where X is some event, person, or thing that they believe causes them to worry. How Emil Cioran Views AnxietyEmil (...)

I recently went back to it and discovered that my solution was basically a blockchain of causal chains that would allow for shared moral responsibility without the need for free will in its various definitions. This intertwining of learning and conceptual change, this flexibility, and this evolution of methodology and objectives, have developed historically in a constant dialogue between practical science and philosophical reflection. This is a further reason why so much science has been deeply influenced by philosophical reflection. The views of scientists, whether they like it or not, are impregnated with philosophy.
And here we come back to Aristotle:
xii
“Philosophy provides guidance how research must be done.”
Not because philosophy can offer a final word about the right methodology of science (contrary to the philosophical stance of Weinberg and Hawking). But because philosophers have conceptual tools for addressing the issues raised by this continuous conceptual shift. The scientists that deny the role of philosophy in the advancement of science are those who think they have already found the final methodology, that is, that they have already exhausted and answered all methodological questions. They are consequently less open to the conceptual flexibility needed to go ahead. They are the ones trapped in the ideology of their time.

Photo by Uroš Jovičić on UnsplashIt’s just another morning and I started from my house to office in my Scooter and I hit a bad traffic that makes me wait for a couple of minutes. Those minutes, as you know, are the hardest to spend. I like driving fast in a free lane with no need to hit brakes, because I don’t like waiting on the road. It’s just waiting on the road, I don’t like waiting at all. I call someone and then the first ring goes, the call wasn’t picked up and then the second ring goes, then call wasn’t picked up and before the third ring starts, my brain tells me that it’s disappointed waiting. Oh, is it it all? I order food and the delivery guy takes couple of more minutes than I anticipated (in fact, I’d overestimated the delivery time, but never mind) and I’m disappointed with the (...)

(...) [Zera Yacob (1599-1692)] developed his new, rationalist philosophy. He believed in the supremacy of reason, and that all humans – male and female – are created equal. He argued against slavery, critiqued all established religions and doctrines, and combined these views with a personal belief in a theistic Creator, reasoning that the world’s order makes that the most rational option.

Description
This edited collection examines the relationship between three central terms — capitalism, feminism, and critique — while critically celebrating the work and life of a thinker who has done the most to address this nexus: Nancy Fraser. In honor of her seventieth birthday, and in the spirit of her work in the tradition of critical theory, this collection brings together scholars from different disciplines and theoretical approaches to address this conjunction and evaluate Fraser’s lifelong contributions to theorizing it. Scholars from #philosophy, #political_science, #sociology, #gender_studies, #race_theory and #economics come together to think through the vicissitudes of capitalism and feminism while also responding to different elements of Nancy Fraser’s work, which weaves together a strong feminist standpoint with a vibrant and complex critique of capitalism.

Of course, the righteous nations of the west would never assassinate journalists, except of course when they do - but, you know, it is different because they support an evil regime. In a statement of 8 April 1999, #NATO indicated that the #RTS studios in #Belgrad would be targeted unless they broadcast 6 hours per day of Western media reports: “If President #Milosevic would provide equal time for Western news broadcasts in its programmes without censorship 3 hours a day between noon and 1800 and 3 hours a day between 1800 and midnight, then his TV could be an acceptable instrument of public information” (▻http://www.icty.org/sid/10052#IVB3). The RTS station was bombed on 23/4/99 - sixteen employees died. Nobody was held accountable for the attack.
Yes, Milosevic was busy with #war_crimes. Yes, RTS was instrumental to propaganda supporting them.
So, to recapitulate: journalists who support a government that is criminal according to your laws are fair game - especially if your laws are universal laws that obviously apply to all humanity (such as the Universal Declaration of #Human_rights or the rulings of your favourite religious leaders). Oh noes you say - human rights are natural rights and supporting them is entirely different to any religious creed. Are you sure ? At the very least it makes for an interesting philosophical debate. ▻http://www.ethicsandglobalpolitics.net/index.php/egp/article/view/26262 #religion #philosophy #terrorism #journalism

In 1971, with the Vietnam war in full swing and radical social movements destabilizing the social, political and cultural order throughout the Western world, Dutch philosopher Fons Elders invited two of the world’s leading thinkers — the American linguist and activist Noam Chomsky and the French social theorist Michel Foucault — to debate a thorny and perennial question: is there such a thing as an “innate” human nature, and if so, what are its implications for our ideas about power, justice, revolution, and the shape of the ideal human society?
