Legendary Soviet Actor Donatas Banionis Dies At 90

Iconic Soviet-era actor Donatas Banionis has died in Vilnius at the age of 90.
Banionis’s son, Raimundas, said the prominent actor known by millions in former Soviet republics died on September 4 of a stroke he suffered two days earlier.
Banionis was born on April 28, 1924, in Lithuania’s central city of Kaunas. He played his first role in cinema in 1959 in the movie “Adam Wants To Be A Human.”
Later, dozens of characters he played in different movies, including “Nobody Wanted To Die,” "Mr. McKinley’s Flight," “Dead Season,” and “Solaris” became iconic in the history of the Soviet cinema.
Banionis played in more than 70 films.
He also starred in films outside of the USSR, such as the lead role in a 1976 East German film about Ludwig van Beethoven [Beethoven – Tage aus einem Leben].
